MAD MAGAZINE TRADING CARDS A HIT: LIME ROCK PLANS SECOND SET
PROVIDENCE, R.I., July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- You asked for it and it looks like you're going to get it again! Exclusive Mad Magazine trading cards just went on sale this month across the country. The 55-card set was designed and produced by Lime Rock International of Providence, and licensed exclusively by Mad Magazine. The cards, with re-creations of Mad's wacky covers on the front, backed with some of the magazine's most famous cartoon and mini-posters, have caught the eys of dealers, collectors and the media -- most of them self-confessed Mad Magazine fans.
Lime Rock has now announced a second set of Mad cards in the works. Once again, the cards will reprise dozens of famous cover illustrations from the magazine's 40-year history. Mad, once an American secret, has, in recent years, grown to be the widest-circulated humor magazine in Europe and is also found on newsstands and mailboxes in parts of Africa, South America and Asia.
Some unique features of the Mad trading cards include an assortment of the famous Spy Vs. Spy cartoons as well as a trading card version of the Mad back cover "fold-ins." Instead of folding in the back page to reveal a hidden gag, the trading card "fold ins" are actually pairs of cards which, when put together, reveal a hidden joke.
Another popular feature of the Mad card set were the Alfred E. Newman hologram cards. Twenty thousand of these cards were randomly inserted into packages of Mad trading cards. Because of the popularity of these premiums, 30,000 new holograms will be inserted into packages of the second edition. We can't give away the secret of this new hologram but we can tell you that Ross Perot's decision to leave the presidential race inspired the theme of ther new hologram. (You'll just have to wait to find out).
As with all Lime Rock trading cards, Instant Winner cards will be inserted in some packages. These winning cards are redeemable for uncut press sheets and other prizes. The second edition of Mad, just like the first edition and all other Lime Rock creations, will be a limited issue set. Once a certain number of complete sets are printed, all plates and negatives are destroyed, adding to the "collectability" of the cards.
Mad Magazine trading cards are available right now nationwide. The second edition of Mad cards will be available for retail sale in late October.
