Bloch said all manga stories focus good qualities in their protagonists, who often face great adversities to remain true to themselves and those around them. She said a very popular comic that's out now is called ``Marudo.'' In the story, a village is terrorized by a demon fox. They seal the monster inside a baby named Marudo. As Marudo grows older, he is shunned by the rest of the villagers. Unfortunately, when he gets angry, the demon arises out of him. He has a good heart, though, and works hard to keep the monster contained. He strives to be accepted as he is and even hopes to someday be the village leader. Louise Xu, 14, of Reseda said she and her friends are crazy about manga. They frequently go to Web sites such as www.fanfiction.net and www.mediaminer.org, where they can write their own manga stories and post them. Bloch said getting young people interested in manga graphic novels also gets them into other types of literature and, hopefully, will make them faithful library users. The library is working with L.A.-based publisher Tokyo Pop with its summer reading club. The regional libraries in the system are hosting programs with artists from Tokyo Pop.
