Byline: MARK KELLAM Valley News Writer

Public libraries throughout the Valley are acquainting young people with the unique styles of manga maNga is a popular Turkish nu metal/rapcore band. On July 17, the Northridge Branch Library held a program featuring many manga books and information about anime, the animated version of manga.

Ania Bloch, young adult librarian, led the discussion. She told the reading club members that manga is extremely popular in Japan, China and Korea and is catching on in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

Besides the stylized artwork, there are some significant differences between U.S. comic books and manga graphic novels. Comics in the U.S. are full of colorful images. Manga novels are generally in black and white, except for the covers, Bloch said. Sometimes the artwork on the inside pages is done in one color, but never the four-color process four-color process: see printing.  that's used in U.S. comics.

Also, U.S. comic books often have one complete story within one book, which may have 20 to 24 pages. In Japan, however, a weekly manga graphic novel may have up to 300 pages. Inside are several serialized stories by various artists. Each weekly installment is part of a larger story arc, Bloch explained.

. Some manga novels focus on romance, cooking or gardening.

Bloch said all manga stories focus good qualities in their protagonists, who often face great adversities to remain true to themselves and those around them.

She said a very popular comic that's out now is called ``Marudo.'' In the story, a village is terrorized by a demon fox. They seal the monster inside a baby named Marudo. As Marudo grows older, he is shunned by the rest of the villagers. Unfortunately, when he gets angry, the demon arises out of him. He has a good heart, though, and works hard to keep the monster contained.

He strives to be accepted as he is and even hopes to someday be the village leader.

Louise Xu, 14, of Reseda said she and her friends are crazy about manga. They frequently go to Web sites such as www.fanfiction.net and www.mediaminer.org, where they can write their own manga stories and post them.

Bloch said getting young people interested in manga graphic novels also gets them into other types of literature and, hopefully, will make them faithful library users.

The library is working with L.A.-based publisher Tokyo Pop with its summer reading club. The regional libraries in the system are hosting programs with artists from Tokyo Pop.

Bloch added that the Los Angeles Public Library
This library serves the city of Los Angeles. For the library serving the county, see County of Los Angeles Public Library.

The Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) system serves the residents of Los Angeles, California.
system welcomes young people to visit its Web site, www.lapl.org. The site areas for young adults and children have been updated. Now, young adults can write their own reviews of books and make suggestions about future programs and events at the library.
