 MACROVISION ANNOUNCES A MAJOR ADVANCEMENT
IN VIDEO SCRAMBLING FOR THE SET-TOP DECODER
ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Finally, there is an affordable answer to the 3 billion dollar cable piracy problem. At the Western Cable Show, Macrovision Corp. introduced PhaseKrypt, a new digital video scrambling technology that offers very high video security at approximately the same manufacturing cost as current generation set-top decoders.
John Ryan, chairman of Macrovision said, "PhaseKrypt is one of the very few fundamental advances in video scrambling in the last 10 years. In contrast to current set-top scrambling techniques, PhaseKrypt-scrambled video offers no decoding clues for a pirate to use. As a result of its high security, program providers, rights holders and cable companies can expect increased income because illegal decoder boxes will no longer siphon away revenue from premium and PPV programs. Furthermore, PhaseKrypt technology provides the highest picture quality of any digital scrambling method yet proposed, due to its unique decoding mechanism."
Current set-top decoders are based on sync-suppression and video inversion techniques. While they provide adequate levels of picture concealment, they are easily compromised. Pirate decoders costing less than $100 are widespread, and can be acquired through numerous catalogs and mail order sources. Some industry estimates of pirate decoders range as high as 25-30 percent of the legitimate decoder base in the United States.
PhaseKrypt is also the first "source-to-subscriber" video scrambling technology. A video program can be scrambled at a satellite uplink or on tape and then transmitted through an entire distribution system to the home. This will add further protection to the program and will also reduce the costs associated with multiple scrambling and descrambling operations in the network.
PhaseKrypt can function either as an independent scrambling technology or as an overlay for current set-top scrambling systems. The greatly enhanced security could extend the life of these systems for years. PhaseKrypt technology is available under license to set- top hardware manufacturers, programers, system operators and rights owners.
Macrovision develops technologies for the protection of video information from unauthorized copying and unauthorized viewing. The company provides products and services for the home video, cable, satellite and corporate communications markets. Macrovision has field offices in New York, London and Tokyo, with corporate offices in Mountain View, Calif.
