MACHINE REPLACING HUMANS IN 'EVITA'.

Byline: Amy Raisin Staff Writer

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  - When ``Evita'' opens Tuesday at the Civic Arts Plaza's Fred Kavli Fred Kavli, b. 1927, is a naturalized American physicist, business leader, innovator, and philanthropist. Born in the village of Eresfjord, Nesset municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway.  Theater, it will feature the sounds of a 20-piece orchestra - but just eight of the musicians will be real.

The stage production will combine the performances of the eight musicians with computer-generated music played on synthesizer synthesizer

to create what some are calling a ``virtual orchestra Virtual Orchestra Is a term used to identify a variety of different types of technology and art forms. Most commonly used to refer to orchestral simulation, either for pre-recorded or live environments, it also has been used to describe other activities, such as IRCAM’s .'' While the show's producers say the end product complements the performers on stage, the musicians displaced from the pit are unhappy.

``There's a difference between a sampled sound and a real person playing that sound,'' said John Mitchell, president of the Theater Musicians Association of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

``There is breathing involved (in playing an instrument). The computer is a machine, and it sounds like a machine. We want people to know the difference,'' he said.

``The term 'virtual orchestra' is a misnomer misnomer n. the wrong name.

,'' he said. ``It's meant to scare theater-goers.

``It's musical accompaniment, and the end product is much better,'' Edelman said. ``The reason people come to see musicals is to hear and see the singers, the costumes, the sets.''

But Mitchell says the decision to use synthesized music is driven by the producers' concern about the bottom line.

``(Edelman) says all this because he doesn't want to pay for the extra bodies in the pit to make it sound fuller and richer,'' Mitchell said. ``If you use the original score you don't need any enhancement. It was written for a live orchestra.''

Edelman denied that the change will save money, although he could not provide cost estimates for using a live orchestra for the production. The week-and-a-half run of ``Evita'' will cost the production company about $350,000, he said.
