MACARTHUR PARK ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 1993 ZINFANDEL JUDGING

 PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The winners of MacArthur Park, Palo Alto's annual Zinfandel Judging were announced today. This year, the unusually high quality of the entries prompted the judges to award multiple medals in each category. For the second consecutive year, Ridge garnered two gold medals, including one "Best of Show" for its 1991 Lytton Springs Zinfandel. From a field of 30 entries, top honors were awarded to the following wines, listed with selections from the judges' tasting notes:
 GOLD:
 Ridge, Lytton Springs, 1991 -- "great balance, ripe berries, lush rich fruit, zesty on palate" -- Best of Show
 Ridge, Geyserville, 1991 -- "fragrant raspberries, velvety texture, jammy, lots of vanilla"
 Fetzer, Barrel Select, 1991 -- "lush, supple, lots of smoky oak, fennel, meaty"
 SILVER:
 Cakebread, 1991 -- "smooth, easy drinking, lovely raspberry flavors, profoundly delicious"
 Clos Du Bois, 1991 -- "rich spicy fruit, pleasing, meaty, peppery, lively"
 Dry Creek, 1991 -- "grapy, good balance, rich, supple, lush raspberries"
 Edmeades Estate, 1990 -- "fruity, rich, perfumy, complex"
 Quivira, 1991 -- "full, rich, soft ripe berries, attractive spicy fruit"
 BRONZE:
 Burgess, 1990 -- "appealing raspberry palate, smoky, tobacco, peppery, intense"
 Clos Du Val, 1989 -- "earthy spice, deep raspberry, rich, well balanced"
 Frog's Leap, Napa, 1991 -- "deep raspberry, woody, spicy, berry fruit, lightly peppered"
 Hidden Cellars, 1991 -- "earthy, long blackberry finish, cherry, tobacco texture"
 Kendall-Jackson, Vintners Reserve, California, 1991 -- "nice texture, raspberries, smoky"
 Storybook Mountain, 1991 -- "rustic, jammy, wonderful black cherry fruit, good texture"
 The winners were selected by a distinguished panel of judges including Angela Freire (associate editor, Wine & Spirits Magazine), Peter Marks (wine buyer, Draeger's Market), Susan Korol Pey (director of Wine & Beverage, Spectrum Foods), Rick Jones (general manager, Greens), Rod Smith (well-known wine writer), Dick Maher (wine consultant) and renowned Zinfandel experts Wilfred Wong (Bay Food, Wine & Spirits, Ashbury Market) and Tom Elliot (Northwest Wines). All entries are currently available to the public through retail outlets and were judged on characteristics of overall quality: varietal representation, balance and drinkability.
 The judging of current releases of Zinfandels is an annual element of the MacArthur Park Wine Festival. Many of the winning Zinfandels will be featured at the Wine Festival on Oct. 9. In addition, 95 California wineries will be pouring more than 200 wines to be accompanied by a feast of MacArthur Park favorites including the restaurant's award-winning, oakwood-smoked, barbecued baby back ribs.
 The 12th Annual MacArthur Park Wine Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the grounds surrounding MacArthur Park. Tickets are $35 per person and include a commemorative tasting glass and unlimited wine and food tastings. MacArthur Park is located at 27 University Ave., Palo Alto, CA 94301, 415-321-9990. Wine Festival proceeds benefit Miramonte Mental Health Services, a private non-profit organization whose mission is to help people who are affected by mental disabilities to fully participate in life.
