MACARTHUR FOUNDATION MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS GRANTS.


The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, philanthropic institution founded 1978 by John D. MacArthur (1897–1978), owner of a prominent insurance company and other businesses, and his wife Catherine T.  has awarded $500,000 in grants to 23 media centers and national media organizations. The awards were made to media centers for film and video projects in three categories: those that foster community engagement; those that serve and involve children and youth; and those that stimulate community discussion about issues related to welfare, workforce development and economic inequality

"Where is the 'Me' in Media?" is a video production training program for high school students that will produce video self-portraits, a documentary exploring issues of identity and representation in the media and a studio production in which students and community members will discuss issues of representation.

Alliance for Community Media, Washington, DC $15,000

For research and publication of an updated version of the Community Media Resource Directory with information from approximately 2000 media centers worldwide.

Children's Media Project, Poughkeepsie, NY $20,000 "TALKING WALLS: Transformation from the Inside Out" is a project on self-exploration and media literacy Media literacy is the process of accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres and forms. It uses an inquiry-based instructional model that encourages people to ask questions about what they watch, see and read.  for at-risk youth using video documentary film making as the primary tool.

AVIDI (Audiovisual Investigations of Democracy) is a collaboration with Phillips Community Television in which young people will be trained to produce media and foster dialogue around issues related to urban youth.

"New Orleans: One City, Many Voices" is a collaboration with independent producers, educational institutions and social justice organizations to produce and screen a series of videos about individuality, identity and social relationships.

The Youth Millennium Project provides disadvantaged youth with video training, equipment access and production assistance to create a video exploring the meaning of family in Alaska.

For support of three programs that involve and serve youths and the community: Community Visions, Street Movies and the Youth History Video Project. Street-Level Youth Media, Chicago, IL $25,000

For support of a large scale video installation at the Street-to-Street Block Party, organized by Chicago youth in collaboration with Scribe Video Center in Philadelphia, the Video Data Bank at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago Access Network Television and Columbia College.

Youth Radio, Berkeley, CA $25,000

To provide training in new media to disadvantaged youth and to upgrade a Web site and links so that youth nationwide can generate programming and information for on-line and traditional radio broadcast outlets.
