MAC DADDY ERRANT PARENT BERNIE IS BACK ON COURSE, AND HIS PAIN EQUALS VIEWERS' GAIN.

Byline: David Kronke TV Critic

'AMERICA! Welcome back!'' Bernie Mac <noinclude> Bernard Jeffrey McCullough (born October 5, 1957[1]), better known as Bernie Mac, is a two time Emmy Award-nominated American actor and comedian.  ebulliently e·bul·lient

[Latin
greets us as the second season of his hit sitcom opens. ``I hope you had a nice little break!''

Well, given that the highlights of our summer viewing were limited to the Lakers' three-peat, a media-hyped talent contest, and two inventive cable cop shows, one grim (Showtime's ``Street Time'') and one fairly silly (USA's ``Monk''), our little break could have been better, thank you. Happily, ``The Bernie Mac Show'' is back to help us forget how otherwise dismal the summer has been - and how otherwise dismal the fall promises to be.

Bernie can be forgiven if tonight's season premiere is a mildly self- congratulatory affair reveling in his first-season success: His manager (Terry Hoffman, in a recurring role) encourages him to show his thoughtful side by appearing in a celebrity golf tournament hosted by Bernie's ``Ocean's Eleven'' co-star Matt Damon.

Even though he worries that his wife Wanda's (Kellita Smith) golf game is ``as ugly as a set of English teeth,'' it's Bernie whose behavior during this charity event - for children! - is egregiously unseemly, as ``Access Hollywood'' captures him swinging a menacing club while chasing his own nephew around a sand trap.

Next week, Bernie returns to what he does best - or worst, depending on your point of view: execrable child-rearing advice. When 5-year-old Bryanna (Dee Dee Davis Dee Dee Davis (born on April 17, 1996 in Culver City, California) is an American actress. She is best known for her role as Bryana "Baby Girl" Thomkins on The Bernie Mac Show. She also guest starred in the Lifetime original series Strong Medicine. ) throws a never-ending fit over the temporary loss of her beloved doll, he decides to try - emphasis on ``try'' - to wean wean (wen) to discontinue breast feeding and substitute other feeding habits.

 her off her neediness.

The episode manages to reference ``The Godfather,'' ``Casino,'' ``Fargo'' and ``Psycho'' all in one comic sequence. And Bernie, who seldom is at a loss for words when directly addressing the camera, is hilariously, dolefully dole·ful
adj.
1. Filled with or expressing grief; mournful. See Synonyms at sad.

2. Causing grief: a doleful loss.
and, above all, mutely sheepish sheep·ish

1. Embarrassed, as by consciousness of a fault: a sheepish grin.

2. Meek or stupid.

at how inept his attempt at tough-love parenting is in this instance. With quality sitcoms at more of a premium than ever, ``The Bernie Mac Show's'' deftly simultaneous sweet-and-sour sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"

 seems all the more impressive.
