M4 wins DOE contract.OAK RIDGE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1996--M4 Environmental L.P. (M4) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have signed a $2.2 million contract for M4 to conduct proof-of-process studies on two mixed waste streams (waste with both hazardous and radioactive constituents) from DOE's Oak Ridge Reservation using Catalytic Extraction Processing (CEP CEP congenital erythropoietic porphyria. CEP abbr. congenital erythropoietic porphyria ) technology. The tests will be conducted at M4's Technology Center in Oak Ridge beginning this month. Under the terms of the cost-share contract, DOE will pay 67 percent of the cost with M4 responsible for 33 percent. CEP, developed by one of M4's parent companies, Molten Metal Technology, Inc., uses molten metal to reduce hazardous waste Hazardous waste Any solid, liquid, or gaseous waste materials that, if improperly managed or disposed of, may pose substantial hazards to human health and the environment. Every industrial country in the world has had problems with managing hazardous wastes. compounds to their basic elements. With the addition of other chemicals, these elements are then recombined to form desired industrial products in the form of gases, ceramics and metals, which can be reused by industry. A related technology called Quantum-CEP(TM) is used to process waste contaminated contaminated, v 1. made radioactive by the addition of small quantities of radioactive material. 2. made contaminated by adding infective or radiographic materials. 3. an infective surface or object. with radioactive materials. It not only destroys hazardous compounds and recycles valuable products, it isolates and radionuclides in a stable, non-leaching form for final disposal. "This contract gives us a major opportunity to validate our capabilities in processing some of DOE's most challenging waste streams," explained Robert Merriman, M4's president and chief executive officer. "We'll conduct tests using two of our Quantum-CEP systems to partition the radionuclides, determine what products we can generate from the waste, and confirm we can process the waste on a commercial scale," he added. The first phase of the DOE Mixed Waste Demonstration Project calls for M4 to process an oil solvent mixture contaminated with uranium. The second phase involves processing soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls polychlorinated biphenyls, (pol´ēklôr´ M4's first phase report is due to DOE in November, after testing is completed in October. Phase two will most likely begin in January, pending successful completion of phase one. M4 is the limited partnership of Lockheed Martin Corp.
