M4 proceeds with plans to process DoD waste.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1996--M4 Environmental L.P. (M4) is moving forward with plans to process hazardous waste for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) using Catalytic Extraction Processing (CEP CEP congenital erythropoietic porphyria.

CEP

) technology.

The company recently was awarded a contract from the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE AFCEE Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence
AFCEE Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment
) and also was placed on the Qualified Bidders List of the U.S. Army Industrial Operations Command.

The AFCEE contract calls for M4 to process hazardous waste streams generated by typical Air Force operations. AFCEE only contracts with companies whose technologies are ready for commercial operation, have the ability to save time and money, and aid in compliance with air, soil and water regulatory requirements. Successful completion of this program will confirm CEP's ability to recycle nearly all of DoD's hazardous waste inventory.

M4's placement on the Army's Industrial Operations Command Qualified Bidders List certifies that the company and CEP meet all necessary technical criteria for effective DoD low-level radioactive waste Noun 1. low-level radioactive waste - (medicine) radioactive waste consisting of objects that have been briefly exposed to radioactivity (as in certain medical tests)  processing and all safety, regulatory and permitting requirements.

"These latest business developments confirm the commercial viability of CEP technology," said Bob Merriman, M4 president and chief executive officer. "These are important steps in our plan to help DoD safely and effectively manage its hazardous waste."

Since its establishment in 1994, M4 has pursued DoD work, promoting CEP's ability to recycle hazardous waste generated by DoD operations. CEP uses molten metal to reduce hazardous waste compounds to their basic elements. With the addition of select reactants, these elements can be recombined to form gas, ceramic and metal products that can be reused by industry. Quantum-CEP(TM) is a related technology for processing radioactive waste. It destroys the hazardous components and reduces and stabilizes the radionuclides.

M4 is the limited partnership of Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE NYSE
