M-Systems introduces industry's fastest SCSI Flash Disk; M-Systems FFD Offers High Read/Write Rates with Capacities Up to 800 Mbytes.

disk. The FFD is designed for systems that require highly reliable data storage in rugged or demanding environments, such as flight instrumentation, mobile systems, and PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN).  systems.

"Due to their mechanical components, magnetic drives (including hard drives) are much less reliable than solid state disks. In many environments, motion, vibration and contamination to the hard drive can cause data to become unreadable or even lost. The FFD is an excellent solution for these environments." said Dov Moran, M-Systems' President. "Though the cost of solid state disks have been considered high, M-Systems' FFD overcomes the issue of cost without compromising speed, capacity, data integrity, or portability, making it an ideal solution for demanding applications and environments."

The FFD has a sustained read rate of 3 Mbytes/sec and a write rate of 1 Mbyte/sec, making it the fastest Solid State Disk on the market. To prevent compromising sensitive data, an ultra fast security erase feature wipes out all the data on the Flash Disk in less than one second. The FFD is offered in capacities ranging from 20 to 800 Mbytes, larger than any solid state flash disk currently available.

The FFD is a drop in replacement for a standard 3.5 inch magnetic disk drive. An optional cradle provides ruggedized removability. The FFD is fully compatible with the SCSI command In SCSI computer storage, a command is the basic unit of communication. The SCSI command architecture was originally defined for parallel SCSI buses but has been carried forward with minimal change for use with Fibre Channel, iSCSI and Serial Attached SCSI.  set. M-Systems has combined its industry-leading True Flash File System (TrueFFS(R)) software with an enhanced Reed-Solomon Error Detection and Correction (algorithm, storage) error detection and correction - (EDAC, or "error checking and correction", ECC) A collection of methods to detect errors in transmitted or stored data and to correct them. This is done in many ways, all of them involving some form of coding.  (EDC/ECC) to provide full read/write capability, high performance, and data reliability. Evaluation units of the FFD are available now. The 80 Mbyte disk, in quantities of 1,000 units, will be priced at less than $1,200.

On an unrelated matter, the Company announced that the recent report by an Israeli newspaper to the effect that it had signed an agreement with Microsoft requiring the inclusion of TrueFFS(R) in each copy of Microsoft's Windows '95 in return for per copy royalty payments by Microsoft was erroneous.

M-SYSTEMS FLASH DISK PIONEERS develops, manufactures and markets a new generation of data storage solutions based on Flash memory. EUROM FLASHWARE SOLUTIONS, its subsidiary, is developing proprietary, advanced and highly-integrated components for use in voice recording and playback in portable applications, including cellular phones, organizers, and PDA's.
