Fall

M-Systems (Nasdaq:FLSH), a leader in flash-based data storage products, and Wyse(R) Technology (TAI:5375.TWO), the worldwide leader in secure, managed thin clients, today announced that the DiskOnChip flash disk will be included as the local storage device within "Gaea" series thin client computers from Wyse.

"Gaea" is a new line of Linux-based terminals designed to meet the needs of enterprises in Asia seeking network computers that offer security, affordability, reliability and ease of management. DiskOnChip, in addition to contributing to these qualities, provides 32 megabytes (256 megabits) of capacity for data, OS (operating system operating system (OS)

Insyde Software Insyde Software is listed on the second board (the GreTai) of the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), stock code 6231. The company is headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan. Intel is said to own approximately 20% of the company. , a leading global provider of BIOS/firmware and consulting services Noun 1. consulting service - service provided by a professional advisor (e.g., a lawyer or doctor or CPA etc.)

"The BIOS storage capability of M-Systems' DiskOnChip Millennium Plus allows Wyse to lower their bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on.  (BOM) cost on each and every 'Gaea' thin client," said Barry Chuang, vice president of marketing, Insyde Software, Taiwan.

"Through our integration efforts, Wyse can replace the read only memory (ROM) -- conventionally used for BIOS storage -- with DiskOnChip, a more economic and efficient solution that offers many additional advantages."

The DiskOnChip Millennium Plus represents the first time a complex controller has been combined with a flash memory chip on a single piece of silicon to form a monolithic Single object. Self contained. One unit.  32MB flash disk. Instead of needing to utilize a separate boot device for BIOS storage in addition to a flash disk, manufacturers may use the DiskOnChip Millennium Plus for both boot execute in place In computer science, an execute in place (XIP) file system is one that allows certain sections of programs to be stored read-only in an area other than main system memory. This is often used to allow code to run from the same location at which it is permanently stored.  (XIP (Execute In Place) The ability to execute a program directly from a memory card. ) and data storage functions.

"DiskOnChip was a natural choice for inclusion in our new line of thin client computers," said Davis Peng, director of Wyse's R&D division.

"In addition to allowing us to break significant cost and performance barriers, DiskOnChip provides the highest protection against software corruption or failure. This reliability adds to the low TCO (1) (Total Cost of Ownership) The cost of using a computer. It includes the cost of the hardware, software and upgrades as well as the cost of the inhouse staff and/or consultants that provide training and technical support. See ROI.  (total cost of ownership), also made possible through the royalty-free status of the Linux OS and the low cost of the SiS550 chipset A group of chips designed to work as a unit to perform a function. For example, a modem chipset contains all the primary circuits for transmitting and receiving. A PC chipset provides the electronic interfaces between all subsystems (see PC chipset for illustration). ."

"Gaea" thin clients contain a SiS550 chipset from SiS, a company that specializes in system on chip (SoC) solutions that contribute to low power consumption and lower overall cost.

"Late last year, we worked with SiS to integrate our DiskOnChip as the flash disk and BIOS storage device within SiS550 reference designs. I am pleased to see that our efforts have come to fruition today in this new line of thin client computers from Wyse," said Yigal Ben-Zeev, associate vice president for M-Systems' DiskOnChip.

"Through the combination of efforts by SiS, Insyde, Wyse and M-Systems, 'Gaea' thin clients offer reliability and high performance at a very competitive price."

"I am very pleased that our chipset is powering the 'Gaea' thin client product from Wyse," said YW Hwang, director of SiS's IA product division. "This is our first project with Wyse and I am looking forward to the availability of these thin clients so that we can purchase some for use within our own company."

"Gaea" thin client computers from Wyse are scheduled to enter mass production this quarter and to be marketed in Southeast Asia Southeast Asia, region of Asia (1990 est. pop. 442,500,000), c.1,740,000 sq mi (4,506,600 sq km), bounded roughly by the Indian subcontinent on the west, China on the north, and the Pacific Ocean on the east.  and China soon after.
