Together, LynuxWorks and RTI's standards-based solution will support the Navy Open Architecture Computing Environment Open Architecture Computing Environment (OACE) is a specification that aims to provide a standards based computing environment in order to decouple computing environment from software applications. This way it enables reusable software applications and components.  (OACE OACE Open Architecture Computing Environment (US Navy) ) which is aimed at improving war-fighting capability by implementing international standards and creating common applications and services in military platforms.

NDDS is currently powering the Ship Wide Area Network (SWAN) for integrating shipboard electronic systems in the new LPD 17 class of Navy warships.

With NDDS, developers utilizing LynuxWorks' LynxOS hard real-time operating system gain a cost-effective, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) standards-based solution for effective and quick communication between processors in an embedded system. By replacing proprietary middleware code, NDDS delivers field-proven system reliability and standards-based portability.

For more than 15 years, LynuxWorks has supported numerous military and government customers in developing their mission-critical defense systems. LynuxWorks is currently working with the Navy OACE to help them achieve cost-savings and standardization in a variety of devices and vehicles to ensure security and reliability. The OACE stipulates that all future software development will be tested to OACE standards. Furthermore, the Navy will not accept software that does not conform to these standards. By ensuring that all future software development upholds to open standards, future upgrades to software and hardware can be made seamlessly, vastly improving interoperability and significantly reducing costs.

"LynxOS combined with NDDS provides a powerful formula for Navy OACE customers looking for a reliable standards-based solution for both their inter-processor communication and operating system needs," said Bob Morris, vice president of sales and marketing for LynuxWorks. "LynuxWorks has a rich heritage in providing open standards interfaces, having supported a full POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX) An IEEE 1003.1 standard that defines the language interface between application programs and the Unix operating system.  process model since we were formed in 1988. Our flagship product, LynxOS, has been certified IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  POSIX .1 conformant and Navy OACE Category 3 compliant and has been deployed in literally hundreds of military applications. Navy contractors looking for a stable Navy OACE conformant RTOS can confidently choose LynuxWorks."

"Middleware is a core enabler of the Navy OACE," said Brett Murphy, vice president of distributed systems at RTI. "The Navy OACE specifically lists RTI's NDDS middleware for publish-subscribe communications. NSWC Noun 1.  Dahlgren's use of NDDS in the HiPer-D testbed, Raytheon's deployment of NDDS on the LPD ships, our many other Navy program wins, and RTI's leadership of the DDS standard all factored into NDDS's listing in the OACE. Applications that wish to be Navy OACE Category 3 compliant can use NDDS."
