The reader, after being introduced to the Johnson years with an excellent historiographical article by Thomas Cowger, will find essays by Jack Valenti, former special assistant to the president, and Nicholas deBelleville Katzenbach, former U.S. attorney general, especially discerning and compelling. And a concluding essay by Joseph A. Califano Jr., former special assistant for domestic affairs, vigorously attempts to establish the importance of the Johnson administration in American history. In fact, Califano makes such a strong case for LBJ that this reader, in reflection, understands why U.S. historians have ranked Johnson as the tenth-greatest American president
