Phil, 29, from Perth, said he "couldn't believe" Fergal had just shared a wave with the world's deadliest shark.

He added: "It was a very scary situation. I saw something in the water which disappeared under the curl of the massive wave.

"I looked at my camera. It was a great white. I couldn't believe it."

And shark expert Zyg Gregorek, 65, of Devon, said the fish could do "a hell of a lot of damage".

"Not many people can say they have surfed with a shark but mum freaked out big time.

"It wasn't trying to hurt anyone. It looks like it's just cruising along enjoying the ride as well. But it reminds you who is in control out there."

Writers at Australia's Surfing Life magazine have awarded Fergal the Euro Surf-Dude Of The Month award.

Its website read: "Just imagine being in the barrel and looking at a massive shark like you're at the bloody aquarium or something. Hats off to you Fergal Smith."

65 deaths and 242 non-fatal attacks by great white sharks have been recorded worldwide since 1876. With 27 fatal attacks, Australia has most, with the most recent in 2005.
