, Blacksburg, VA, has been issued U.S. patent 7,001,942, entitled "Flame Retardant Flame retardants are materials that inhibit or resist the spread of fire. Naturally occurring substances such as asbestos as well as synthetic materials, usually halocarbons such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorendic acid  Thermoset A polymer-based liquid or powder that becomes solid when heated, placed under pressure, treated with a chemical or via radiation. The curing process creates a chemical bond that, unlike a thermoplastic, prevents the material from being remelted. See thermoplastic.  Resins and Methods of Making the Same." The patent is for novel flame retardant thermoset resin systems used in coatings, adhesives, plastics, and composites. By using superabsorbent polymer (SAP) particles incorporated into synthetic resins, Luna's flame retardants produce a noncombustible surface under fire conditions and slow heat transfer through the material. The flame retardants are based in inorganic materials, which avoid the environmental impact and toxicity concerns associated with halogenated halogenated
