Architectural Record magazine has selected the "Houses of Frank Lloyd Wright" as a prize for its 1996 Computer Delineation Awards. These awards recognize architects and designers for innovative uses of computer imaging in presenting design ideas. "Luna Imaging's publication reflects the standards of style, quality and technological innovation that the Computer Delineation Awards recognize," said James S. Russell, AIA, managing senior editor of Architectural Record.

Created by Luna Imaging, in collaboration with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, "Houses of Frank Lloyd Wright" is a comprehensive, single-disk CD-ROM publication containing more than 1,000 digital images of drawings and photographs, documenting more than 80 of Wright's most significant residential projects. Luna Imaging's unique Insight visual environment enables users to work with this collection the way practicing architects or scholars would actually use original drawings and photographs in an archive. The CD-ROM provides unmatched versatility in interacting with the data and viewing the images. Insight provides the ability to rapidly browse and find every drawing or photograph desired. Once the desired images are found they may be viewed singly or concurrently up to full-screen at high resolution. Images may also be zoomed, panned or cropped to view key details at will.

Product testing with practicing architects revealed that among their critical reference needs are high-resolution close-ups of architectural details. These provide the insight and inspiration for the difficult part of any design project, namely integrating the myriad elements of a project into a cohesive whole.

"Houses of Frank Lloyd Wright" includes nearly 200 high-resolution close-ups of architectural details. These include more than 25 window designs, 20 examples of fireplaces, more than 20 views of architectural elements (like capitals, cornices and finials) and numerous illustrations of Wright's innovative use of surfaces. The flexible Insight visual environment allows designers to compare these details any way they want.

For every image in the publication, Luna Imaging creates a digital master that duplicates the quality of large-format photography. From this digital master Luna Imaging then publishes the high-resolution images visible on the user's computer, delivering the visual quality of a full-page plate in a high quality book.

"Our goal is to deliver complete fidelity in reproducing Wright's original works from the Archive at Taliesin West," said Michael Ester, president of Luna Imaging. "`Houses of Frank Lloyd Wright' delivers the equivalent content of a high quality art book with more than 1,000 full-page, fully indexed color Refers to images that contain a maximum of 256 colors, also known as "8-bit color." The digital format then adds the capability to rapidly search and sort through the collection, plus the ability to view any desired combination of images side-by-side."
