In addition, the combined products increase the simplicity and capabilities for remote replication and disaster recovery configurations for mainframe DASD. DASD costs are dramatically improved and proprietary mainframe channel extension and data replication costs can be cut. In their place, standard networking protocols and StorageTek's open systems data management tools can be deployed.

"I am encouraged by our strong and growing partnership with StorageTek to meet the ongoing data management needs of mainframe customers," said Arthur Tolsma, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "This combination will be particularly noteworthy for mainframe customers seeking a way to increase the productivity of their primary storage assets."

Luminex's Virtual/BLUE 3990 is the first disk independent control unit that enables open systems disk storage for use as native DASD on mainframes. Each Virtual/BLUE 3990 control unit supports up to 1024 DASD volumes configured as 3380/3390 -3, -9, -27, -54 devices, providing more than 50TB of storage capacity. The Virtual/BLUE 3990 control unit effectively eliminates the proprietary boundaries and vendor lock-in In economics, vendor lock-in, also known as proprietary lock-in, customer lock-in, lock-in is where a customer is dependent on a vendor for products and services and cannot move to another vendor without substantial switching costs, real and/or perceived.  that separate the mainframe and open systems storage worlds, enabling mainframe enterprises to take advantage of the ever-increasing features and ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system.
