Lucent Technologies Signs $1.9 Million Major League Contract.

: LU) today announced it has signed a $1.9 million contract with Major League Baseball's Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners are a member of the Western Division of Major League Baseball's American League. SAFECO Field, a 47,000-seat, natural grass facility, will be one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the country. Its Lucent-based data and voice networks will be at the heart of the facility's day-to-day operations, including ticket, merchandise and refreshment sales and up-to-the-minute team and game information. Through its NetCare(R) portfolio of services, Lucent will provide seven-days-a-week, 24-hours-a-day maintenance for maximum system reliability and availability.

The ballpark's data network features four of Lucent's award-winning Cajun(TM) P550(TM) Switches and 39 Cajun P220(TM) Gigabit Switches over which 100 megabits per second (unit) megabits per second - (Mbps, Mb/s) Millions of bits per second. A unit of data rate. 1 Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits per second (not 1,048,576).

This network will support SAFECO Field's Internet Protocol- (IP-) based Micros point-of-sale food service application throughout the park, plus the Mariners' administrative offices. Additionally, the data infrastructure will give fans in the ballpark's 69 luxury suites the option of direct Internet access See how to access the Internet.  through their own laptop computers to obtain real-time statistics and other information.

The modular Cajun P550 Switches will provide all backbone data network connectivity and seamlessly interoperate with the standalone Cajun P220 units to be deployed in wiring closets throughout the stadium. The SAFECO Field data network will be kept secure by two Lucent Managed Firewall servers that will protect the network from all unauthorized access.

Digital telecommunications network that operates over standard copper telephone wires or other media.
 trunks for access to local and long distance services, a 50-agent call center with automatic call distribution and the CentreVu(R) Response Solutions interactive voice response system. The network also includes INTUITY(TM) AUDIX AUDIX Audio Information Exchange (R) voice and fax messaging for 500 users.

Through the new call center, fans will be able to purchase tickets and merchandise. Eventually, season ticket holders and others with Mariners accounts may be able to order food and beverages before or during the game and specify the inning during which they want them delivered to their seats. Also for the 2000 season, the Mariners will introduce Lucent's CentreVu Internet Solutions, an Internet Call Center that allows fans who access their Web site, www.mariners.org, to interact with a live agent if they wish.

The Mariners' toll-free fan information line (1-800-MY-MARINERS) will let callers select from a menu of pre- and post-game reports, SAFECO Field homestand updates and other information. By next season this line will also feature a fax back capability to deliver game notes, box scores and other information directly to Mariners fans throughout the region. The unified voice and fax messaging will allow Mariners scouts and others who work remotely to access their messages from a single terminal, either a phone or a PC.

Lucent's contract with the Mariners also calls for SYSTIMAX(R) voice and data cabling infrastructure, including more than 700,000 feet of copper wire and more than 30,000 feet of fiber for the data network backbone.

As part of the agreement, Lucent also becomes a sponsor of the Mariners, which includes: the establishment of a charity endeavor, called "The Lucent Double Play Program," through which Lucent will donate $100 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that grants wishes to children (2.5 years to 18 years old) with life-threatening medical conditions.  (R) of Washington State for every double play the Mariners complete; naming rights Naming rights are the right to name a piece of property, either tangible property or an event, usually granted in exchange for financial considerations. Institutions like schools, places of worship and hospitals have a tradition of granting donors the right to name facilities in  sponsorship of the Lucent Terrace Club, a premium seating section; plus advertising and ballpark signage.
