Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today introduced a new network solution to help service providers quickly enter markets worldwide to deliver voice, fax and data services.

Lucent's new ExchangePlus VSE is a compact version of the carrier-class EXS ExchangePlus tandem, international gateway solution. Using EXS ExchangePlus and ExchangePlus VSE together provides a network solution that concentrates voice, fax and data traffic onto IP connections and converts incoming and outgoing traffic between circuit and packet networks. By handling circuit and packet conversions at the edge of the network and concentrating traffic onto the main backbone, carriers can increase network efficiency, supporting more customers using the same bandwidth.

ExchangePlus VSE supports multiple call routing options, some of which include least cost and time of day routing. The flexible signaling of the system is also important for global market deployments.

In addition to its extensive protocol library and the ability to easily create in-country variants, the ExchangePlus solution supports multiple international IP signaling standards, including H.323 Annex G, the iNOW! (interoperability NOW!) standard from the International Multimedia Teleconferencing Consortium, Inc. (IMTC) and OSP (Open Settlement Protocol).

The ExchangePlus solution is targeted at international carriers, resellers and emerging service providers seeking to deliver voice and data services over IP networks. The solution also can help leverage investments in circuit-switched networks, while service providers build IP network support.

The EXS ExchangePlus portfolio of open, scalable switching products originated from the former Excel Switching Corporation acquired by Lucent last November. Today, there are more than 4,500 EXS-based systems deployed in over 70 countries, with nearly 50 percent installed outside of the U.S.
