Lucent Technologies (NYSE NYSE

: LU) today announced a new portfolio of enhanced services Enhanced service is service offered over commercial carrier transmission facilities used in interstate communications, that employs computer processing applications that act on the format, content, code, protocol, or similar aspects of the subscriber's transmitted information;  designed to help wireless network operators rapidly deploy new features and generate new revenues.

The new enhanced services portfolio will allow wireless carriers to offer their customers in-demand applications including Talking Caller ID A telephone company service that sends the caller's telephone number between the first and second ring of the call. If the calling number is not blocked, the calling number is displayed on the handset or base station of the called party.  and remote customer service features. The portfolio also includes powerful service management applications including the Service Interaction Manager (SIM) for customizing enhanced service offers for each individual subscriber.

The announcement was made here at the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association's Wireless 2000 show, an exhibition and conference for the mobile communications industry communications industry, broadly defined, the business of conveying information. Although communication by means of symbols and gestures dates to the beginning of human history, the term generally refers to mass communications. .

The Yankee Group (the Yankee Group, Boston, MA, www.yankeegroup.com) A major market research, analysis and consulting firm founded in 1970 by Howard Anderson. It provides general consulting and strategic planning in the computer and communications field. , an industry analyst firm, estimates the number of global wireless (cellular/PCS) users reached 469.5 million subscribers during 1999, and will reach one billion users in 2003. "Lucent is committed to providing carriers with revenue-generating enhanced services they need to thrive in the highly-competitive wireless marketplace," said Curtis Holmes, vice president of the intelligent networks unit at Lucent Technologies. "These new wireless offerings will help network operators provide more features, and give flexible call management capabilities to consumers."

Wireless Talking Caller ID allows subscribers to have incoming callers identified by the sound of their voice. Subscribers can then accept or reject the call, forward the call to voicemail or play an announcement to the caller. With this service, both analog and digital subscribers will be better able to manage their incoming calls. Customers benefit from the safety of this service; they get audio caller information enabling them to keep their eyes on the road while they are driving.

With Over-The-Air Parameter Administration (OTAPA OTAPA Over-the-Air Parameter Administration ), network operators can manage a variety of key processes remotely, such as initiating service for new subscribers, updating service for existing customers and downloading preferred roaming lists The Preferred Roaming List (PRL) is a database residing in a wireless (primarily CDMA) device, such as a cellphone, that contains information used during the system selection and acquisition process. In the case of RUIM-based CDMA devices, the PRL resides on the RUIM.  in CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  networks. This type of enhanced provisioning and parameter administration can be done while the phone is turned on and does not require any action on the part of the subscriber. OTAPA simplifies the activation process for new subscribers, lowers subscriber acquisition costs, minimizes fraudulent use of wireless service and decreases customer churn. This service will also enhance the functionality of Lucent's Over-the-Air Function (OTAF OTAF Over the Air Service Provisioning Function

) software for use in CDMA Networks.

The Service Interaction Manager (SIM) program provides simplified provisioning interfaces between multiple services. With SIM, consumers will be able to utilize a variety of value-added wireless services such as Talking Caller ID and remote customer service features simultaneously. This also makes it possible for network operators to offer packages of wireless applications and services customized for each individual end-user.

Wireless Talking Caller ID is available now. Service Interaction Manager will be available in the second quarter of 2000, and Over-The-Air Parameter Administration will be available in the third quarter of 2000.
