Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue to Receive "Telehealth Champion Award" During Health Awareness Day at State Legislature, April 25, 2007.

Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center First Program in the Nation to Offer Telehealth Services with WebVMC's RemoteNurse to Northeastern North Carolina in Homes, Community Centers, a School, and a Fitness Center;

Legislators to Participate in Telehealth Interactive Demonstrations

RALEIGH, N.C. -- As part of the North Carolina Community Health Center Association's Health Awareness Day on April 25 at the North Carolina state legislature, Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue will be presented with the first "Telehealth Champion Award" by Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center (RCCHC).

Perdue, who chairs the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund (NCHWTF), will receive the award during a ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. Along with a special video highlighting patient success stories, attendees will have an opportunity to use telemonitoring technology to check their own health condition using the RemoteNurse[TM] monitor developed by WebVMC. RCCHC utilizes WebVMC in several ongoing telehealth programs. Interactive telehealth demonstrations will also be conducted that day from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the senate chambers for all legislators, state legislature personnel, and staff.

As part of a three-year program funded by the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission (NCHWTF), RCCHC has been instrumental in advancing the medical services provided to all citizens in the Roanoke Chowan River Basin region - particularly those in underserved rural communities who do not have access or insurance coverage for standard health care. The program began last fall with in-home monitoring for patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The program has since expanded to three community centers, a local middle school, and a fitness center. Recent statistics show a marked increase in the number of people now being successfully monitored for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease, thereby reducing the number of hospitalizations and emergency room visits.

In addition to Britton, Kim Schwartz, Chief Executive Officer of RCCHC, and Bill Behnke, Chief Development Officer for WebVMC, will be on hand to discuss the benefits of telehealth in serving the various communities and will share outstanding results from some of their program participants.
