Lowe's files Eugene store site plans.

Lowe's, the nation's second-largest home improvement retailer, has filed preliminary development plans to join an already crowded field in the Eugene-Springfield lumber lumber, term for timber that has been cut into boards for use as a building material. The major steps in producing lumber involve logging (the felling and preparation of timber for shipment to sawmills), sawing the logs into boards, grading the boards according to  and home products market.

The North Carolina-based chain submitted a request Tuesday for a development assistance meeting with Eugene's Planning and Development Department.

The request outlines plans for a 139,000-square-foot Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse at 4650 W. 11th Ave., and seeks city input on issues including parking, zoning and natural resources.

The company currently has 11 stores in Oregon - five in the Portland area, two in the Salem area and single stores in McMinnville, Bend, Roseburg and Medford. There are more than 1,150 Lowe's nationwide, and Smith said that the chain will add another 150 to 160 stores in 2006.

Lowe's has long been rumored to be interested in the Eugene-Springfield market, and competes head-to-head with Home Depot in many cities around the country.

No meeting with city staff has yet been scheduled as a result of the request submitted by Lowe's on Tuesday.

The preliminary plans call for two additional buildings - 12,000 square feet and 3,576 square feet - for other retail operations, in addition to the Lowe's building.

Sadri's property was briefly mentioned as a possible new location for the Eugene Water & Electric Board, should the utility sell its current location to Triad Hospitals Triad Hospitals is a Fortune 500 company based in Plano, Texas. In February 2007 it received a merger/buyout offer from another company, and then in March 2007 it received a superior merger/buyout offer from Community Health Systems of , but negotiations for a sale of the property broke down.
