Although the author may not perceive herself as the "divine requirement" to call these energies into shifting their identities, but rather as a compelled conduit for the voice of the "Holy Unknowable un·know·a·ble adj. Impossible to know, especially being beyond the range of human experience or understanding: the unknowable mysteries of life. ," her skill for evoking these characters/ancestors/Orisha is vibrant. Love being the perpetual motivation for each of these characters, and Bettye's (dry) bar being the main setting, the text is then able to telescopically focus the reader/witness on Love as a vehicle for spiritual and emotional transformation. This transformation comes sometimes with violence, sometimes as a secret and sometimes as plain and tender as a new day. Bridgeforth completes her noble mission at the end of the text, simply asking reader/witness/energy to remember this transformation as a universal imperative. Tonya C.
