Losing over Laramie.


Seven years after the brutal murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard Matthew Wayne Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998) was an American student at the University of Wyoming who was fatally attacked near Laramie, on the night of October 6 – October 7, 1998 in what was widely reported by international news media as a savage , an award-winning play inspired by the tragedy is still too controversial for some high schools, who continue to ban it.

In the latest round of rejections, two productions of Moises Kaufman's The Laramie Project--one at Southridge High School Southridge High School may refer to:
  • Southridge High School (Kennewick) in Kennewick, Washington, United States
  • Southridge High School (Oregon) in Beaverton, Oregon, United States
  • Miami Southridge High School in Miami, Florida, United States
 in Beaverton, Ore., and the other at Elgin Park Secondary School in Surrey, Canada--have been yanked from their school's fall lineup. The reason given in both cases: The play's sex and profanity Irreverence towards sacred things; particularly, an irreverent or blasphemous use of the name of God. Vulgar, irreverent, or coarse language.

The use of certain profane or obscene language on the radio or television is a federal offense, but in other situations, profanity

Malia Mildrexler, a 16-year-old member of the gay-straight alliance at Southridge, was "heartbroken." "Anything that even touches on sexual identity is censored at our school," she said. "But these are issues teens really need to be talking about."
