Los Angeles offers an Olympics preview this summer.

Los Angeles offers an Olympics preview this summer The next Olympics won't unfold until 1992, but the U.S. Olympic Festival offers a preview in Los Angeles July 12 through 21. Tickets have been on sale since May, so order now for best choice.

U.S. Olympic Festival officials estimate that 75 percent of next year's team will come from among the 3,200 athletes expected to compete in 37 sports at 21 sites (traditional winter Olympics sports of speed and figure skating are included). Since the festival doesn't pay appearance fees, some big-name athletes will be absent. But you'll see tomorrow's stars without the steep cost or complexity of Olympics ticketing.

Tickets range from $4 TO $15. Sports expected to sell out quickest are boxing, diving, figure skating, soccer, swimming, table tennis, tae kwon do, and volleyball. Competition at large sites, such as UCLA's Drake Stadium, and lesser-known sports--archery, wrestling, fencing, team handball, kayaking--should still be available in July. You can order tickets through TicketMaster at (213) 480-3077. To get up-to-the-minute information on best available seating, call the USOF ticket office at 489-1440. Call the same number to volunteer.

Here's a list of the sports that will be played:

Archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, canoeing, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, figure skating, gymnastics (both artistic and rhythmic), judo, kayaking, modern pentathlon, racquetball, roller skating, rowing, shooting, soccer, softball, speed skating, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, tae kwon do (martial arts), team handball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, weight lifting, wrestling, yachting.
