"The more a person tries to quit, the greater chance of effectively stopping the addiction." The American Cancer Society reports that quitting smoking can have immediate health benefits. A smoker's heart rate and blood pressure lower 20 minutes after quitting. Heart attack risk decreases after 24 hours and in 72 hours breathing becomes easier. According to a recent County of Los Angeles, L.A. Health Brief on Smoking Cessation Efforts Among Adult Smokers, the overall smoking rate in Los Angeles County has declined to a historic low of 14.6 percent. "While we are proud of the decline in smoking prevalence in the County, there are still more than 1 million adult smokers and we must do everything we can to encourage smokers to quit," said Fielding. The first Great American Smokeout took place on November 18, 1976 when the California Division of the American Cancer Society successfully encouraged nearly one million smokers to quit for the day. The following year, the American Cancer Society began promoting the day nationally. |
