), has been awarded a $276.5 million U.S. Army contract to integrate electronic warfare equipment on helicopters and vehicles, giving battlefield commanders new tools that will be important in fighting the digital war of the future.

The five-year contract positions Loral as an important electronic warfare and intelligence systems integrator for the Army, which has undertaken a major Defense Department initiative to send its land combat elements into the field with intelligence-gathering sensors and subsystems.

Once integrated and deployed universally, these sensors will provide tactical commanders with tools to electronically map the entire battlefield and to identify, locate and determine the intentions of enemy forces.

, is an indefinite delivery and indefinite quantity production and integration program that will enable the Army to strengthen its intelligence assets by placing common sensors on common platforms. It is being managed by U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command (C4IEW C4IEW Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Electronic Warfare (DOD) ), Project Manager Signals Warfare, Warrenton, Va.

As prime contractor, Loral will initially manufacture, procure and integrate sensor subsystems on the High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HMMWV HMMWV High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV is a trademark of AM General LLC; aka HUMVEE, also a trademark of AM General LLC) , used by the Army's light divisions and on the Army's EH-60L Blackhawk helicopters.

Later on, Loral will integrate additional platforms, including the XM5 Electronic Fighting Vehicle (EFVS EFVS Electronic Fighting Vehicle System ) and the U.S. Marine Corps Light Armored Vehicle (LAV), with similar electronic sensors.

Loral's major subcontractors on IEWCS include Sanders, Nashua, N.H., which has experience with the AN/MSR-3 and and other RF systems; Condor Systems, Inc., San Jose, Calif., which will supply Electronic Intelligence Systems (ELINT Noun 1.
