Looking forward to national conference. (Dear Reader). It is with very mixed emotions that I write this "Dear Reader" column. I am so excited about the upcoming national conference and eager to have you share my enthusiasm as you learn more about the program we've put together for you. At the same time, I am saddened by the sudden and untimely death of my colleague, Carol Winborne, a member of the 2003 Conference Planning Committee planning committee n (in local government) → comité m de planificación and a dear friend. Carol had a significant role in designing this year's program. In fact, it is due to the vision and talent of the entire conference committee that we have such a varied and comprehensive program to offer you this year. I truly feel we have something on this program for everyone! Let me share with you a few of the reasons I am so looking forward to this year's conference. The PRE-CONFERENCE EVENTS--Pedagogy Saturday, Professional Studio Saturday, Technology in Music Symposium--continue to explore new avenues, becoming even more valuable to our membership. I know that the chairs for this year's events have planned exciting sessions that will reinvigorate your teaching. Our CONFERENCE ARTISTS and KEYNOTE SPEAKERS are stellar! Of the nearly twenty MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association MTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee) National Conferences I have attended, these artists stand front-and-center with the finest we have ever presented. Abravanel Hall Abravanel Hall is a concert hall in Salt Lake City, Utah that is home to the Utah Symphony and Opera, and is part of the Salt Lake County Center for the Arts. The hall is an architectural landmark in the city, and is adjacent to Temple Square and the Salt Palace on South Temple , venue for many of our concerts, has acoustics that will further enhance these performances. I cannot begin to express how thrilled I am with the wide VARIETY OF SESSIONS we have programmed for this year's conference. Our talented and knowledgeable PRESENTERS will offer sessions that will energize en·er·gize v. en·er·gized, en·er·giz·ing, en·er·giz·es v.tr. 1. To give energy to; activate or invigorate: "His childhood and revitalize independent and college teachers alike. There will be an array of mini-recitals, plus pedagogical ped·a·gog·ic also ped·a·gog·i·cal adj. 1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of pedagogy. 2. Characterized by pedantic formality: a haughty, pedagogic manner. , wellness, early childhood, collaborative string and voice sessions, to name just a few. This year's conference is being held in conjunction with the National Association of Teachers of Singing The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) was founded in 1944 and is now the largest association of teachers of singing in the world. Today NATS boasts more than 6,500 members in the United States, Canada, and over twenty-five other countries around the world, including (NATS NATS National Air Traffic Services NATS National Association of Teachers of Singing NATS Naval Air Transport Service NATS National Aerospace Technology Strategy NATS Nissan Anti-Theft System NATS Nebraska Association of Teachers of Science ) Spring Workshop, offering our voice members the perfect opportunity to take part in both events. Be sure to bring your credit cards! We will again have approximately 160 EXHIBITORS to entice us and keep us current with the latest in music, books, instruments and technology. In addition, the COMPETITION FINALISTS competing in the MTNA competitions are sure to amaze and inspire us. These students have worked hard to reach this level of competition. This is an opportunity to see them rise to the challenge. Finally, there is the spectacular CONFERENCE SETTING--Salt Lake City, surrounded by the beautiful Wasatch Mountains Wasatch Mountains Range of the south-central Rocky Mountains. They extend about 250 mi (400 km) from southeastern Idaho to central Utah, U.S. The highest peak is Mount Timpanogos (12,008 ft [3,660 m]). The Timpanogos Cave National Monument is within the range. . We are taking advantage of our location by offering special events that feature the unique offerings of Salt Lake. For example, we have a session that gives attendees the exclusive opportunity to experience an acoustical tour of one of the Tabernacle Tabernacle (tăb`ərnăk'əl), in the Bible, the portable holy place of the Hebrews during their desert wanderings. It was a tent, like the portable tent-shrines used by ancient Semites, set up in each camp; eventually it housed the Ark organs. For those who decide to participate in the pre- and post-tours, you will be able to partake in a range of special Salt Lake area activities. It seems an especially fitting tribute to Carol Winborne that we dedicate this year's conference program in her memory. Please join me in celebrating Carol's life and legacy by coming to Salt Lake--learning, sharing and taking back to your students and colleagues the ideas and enthusiasm you will gain from this conference. Some of you also may want to honor Carol's memory in a more tangible way. By making a contribution to the MTNA FOUNDATION, your donation toward a FOUNDATION Fellowship in her name will help sustain her passion for the wonderful profession we all share. Hope to see you in Salt Lake City!
