A couple of local companies are trying to establish footholds in Japan.

Los Angeles-based digital music service Napster An online music store from Napster, LLC, New York (www.napster.com) that lets you download copyrighted titles for a fee. In October 2003, the Napster site went live again after being dormant for many months.  Inc. has launched its mobile service in Tokyo. Napster said that its mobile over-the-air song and ring tone service is now available on NTI' DoCoMo's iMode mobile Internet Refers to gaining access to the Internet using a lightweight, handheld device. Napster began offering PC-based music subscription services in Japan last month with Tower Records Japan. The new service is available for approximately $3 per month.

Separately, Los Angeles-based MySpace.com and Japanese firm Softbank are teaming on a 50-50 joint venture to launch a Japanese version of the popular social networking Web site See social networking Web sites and social networking site. .

MySpace KK will feature a localized Translated into the spoken language of the country. See localization.  version of the MySpace Web site, and will operate as a separate company. MySpace said that the new company will maintain headquarters in Tokyo, with local operations and staff, and will be headed by Makoto Kouyama.
