Look for the queer label: these music labels--some gay-targeted, others gay-owned--release a broad range of music to pride by.


From the un-PC comedy sides of Camp in the mid '60s to the fierce dykes at Mr. Lady (Le Tigre's original home), record labels run by and aimed at LGBT LGBT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender  individuals are hardly a fresh trend. But with each new company catering to the queer community, the range of sounds--and marketing approaches--diversifies markedly.

Candystorecords: The discerning dance music fan's answer to Rhino's reissues, Candystorecords is responsible for MightyReal, 15 CDs' worth of remastered, extended, and thematically sequenced club classics dating from 1980 to 1988.

Cherchez la Femme: Following Mr. Lady's demise in 2003, Portland, Ore., artist Sarah Dougher founded this feminist- and queer-friendly label to fill the void. In addition to Dougher, CLF CLF

Daemon Records: Amy Ray of Indigo Girls founded Daemon Pronounced "dee-mun" as in the word "demon," it is a Unix program that executes in the background ready to perform an operation when required. Functioning like an extension to the operating system, a daemon is usually an unattended process that is initiated at startup.  in 1990 as a not-for= profit label that could nurture artists too edgy for corporate entertainment. Although not exclusively LGBT, Daemon's catalog includes Ray's solo work, queer spoken-word act Athens Boys Choir, and recent GLAAD GLAAD Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation  Media Award nominee Girlyman.

LML LML - 1. Lazy ML.

A lazy, purely functional variant of ML designed by Thomas Johnson and Lennart Augustsson at the Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden in 1984. LML is implemented on the G-machine, and was used to implement the first Haskell B compiler.
 Music: Run by singer Lee Lessack, LML distributes top-notch jazz, Broadway, and cabaret vocal music. Its roster of more than 65 artists includes such supper club and Great White Way favorites as Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked) and the late Nancy LaMott.

Silver Label: A division of hip-hop pioneer imprint Tommy Boy, Silver Label continues to parlay its success with the Queer as Folk Queer as Folk may refer to:
  • Queer as Folk (UK TV series) (1999-2000), a British television series about a group of gay men
  • Queer as Folk (US TV series) (2000-2005), a North American remake of the British series
 and L Word compilations into new projects. Silver is currently digitally distributing lesbian hip-hop act God-Des and She God-Des and She are a lesbian hip hop duo from the United States.

God-Des has a voice and style similar to Da Brat, yet draws attention because of her controversial lyrics, similar to the shock value of Eminem.
 [see page 126] and has just is sued Chavela at Carnegie Hall, a live CD by the legendary cross-dressing Mexican vocalist Chavela Vargas.

Music With a Twist: A joint effort between the Sony Music Label Group and Logo founder Matt Farber. Farber promises that the highly publicized Twist (which so far has not announced any artists) "will be the label where artists can take pride in their orientation as well as their artistry," la gay British Pop Idol veteran Will Young.

Rendezvous Entertainment: Although Rendezvous has dabbled dab·ble  
v. dab·bled, dab·bling, dab·bles

v.tr.
To splash or spatter with or as if with a liquid: "The moon hung over the harbor dabbling the waves with gold" 
 in electronic and world music, this label--helmed by out Grammy nominee Dave Koz--focuses primarily on the smooth jazz that brought the saxophonist fame, promoting a range of artists including Dirty Harry's son, acclaimed bassist and bandleader Kyle Eastwood.
