(tool) antivirus software - Programs to detect and remove computer viruses. The simplest kind scans executable files and boot blocks for a list of known viruses. for PC Dos PC DOS Personal Computer Disk Operating System (IBM) computers will now include a Fat Allocation Table (FAT table) check and disk surface check with every scan for viruses. Virus ALERT will be one of the first antivirus programs to offer this feature as a default setting. While scanning for viruses, Virus ALERT now also checks for lost clusters, cross linked clusters, invalid cluster numbers, invalid allocation sizes, and fragmented files. The filenames of all files with FAT table problems, plus the total number of fragmented files, will be listed at the end of the scan. FAT problems cause irratic computer behaviour, and while sometimes caused by viruses are more usually caused by computer crashes and software gliches. A fragmented file means the file is spread all over the disk instead of in one location. Extensive fragmentation of files usually causes degraded computer performance. Virus ALERT will not fix FAT table and fragmentation problems, just alert the user to their existence. Another Innovation for Look Software Look Software released Virus ALERT Plus today.
