Barron will play in Eugene on Tuesday night as part of the Shedd Institute's "Now Hear This" series.

The 63-year-old jazzman first came to wide public attention when he played in Dizzy Gillespie's quartet in the 1960s. Barron would later co-found Sphere, a group devoted to the music of Thelonius Monk. He has also worked with James Moody, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Buddy Rich, Ron Carter, Chet Baker, Benny Carter, Regina Carter and Ornette Coleman.

The brother of the late tenor saxophonist Bill Barron, Kenny Barron taught piano and keyboard harmony at Rutgers University in New Jersey for 25 years.

His recordings include "People Time" and "Voyage" with Stan Getz; "Piccolo piccolo, small transverse flute pitched an octave higher than the standard flute. Its tone is bright and shrill, and it can produce the highest notes in the orchestral range. The piccolo is used in orchestras and especially in military bands.
