partnership with businesses and community organizations.

The partnership began more than 12 years ago when the school district and the Parma Area Chamber of Commerce created the Community/Business/Schools (C/B/S) Partnership while leaders were discussing student needs and available community resources. Three communities--Parma, Parma Heights Parma Heights, city (1990 pop. 21,448), Cuyahoga co., NE Ohio, a residential suburb of Cleveland; settled 1818, set off from Parma and inc. 1912. It is surrounded on three sides by Parma, and the two cities share the same school system and other municipal facilities.  and Seven Hills--and about 30 businesses and organizations, such as the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, are involved.

The mission of C/B/S is to develop programs to support the goals of the Parma City School District by matching community resources with the needs of district students, teachers and administrators and by aligning a·lign

 school resources with community needs.

The depth of involvement of the businesses and organizations differs. Some sponsor one-time events or develop other limited relationships with a particular class on a particular project, for example, while others establish ongoing, broader relationships with the schools. The types of activities partners participate in include sponsoring career fairs, providing job-shadowing experiences for students, mentoring, hosting workplace tours, contributing money, equipment or supplies, and providing community-service options for students.

Events sponsored with community partners during the past year have included student art shows, a holiday tree project and a read-a-thon at a local mall.

The school district found that partnerships have become stronger as businesses and organizations become increasingly involved. The district and local chamber are currently investigating ways to take the partnership to the next level.
