Long-distance savings delayed too long for Californians.

Five states have opened up their long-distance telephone markets to full competition. In all five cases, consumers have seen prices fall, while choices and innovative products have expanded. For example, in New York this year, customers are saving $700 million on their phone bills. Californians deserve these same savings and benefits.

After more than three years of review, the California Public Utilities Commission The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC; also often commonly referred to as simply the PUC) [1] is a state Public Utilities Commission which regulates privately-owned utilities in the state of California, including electric power,  (CPUC CPUC California Public Utilities Commission
CPUC Current Procurement Unit Cost
) is still considering Pacific Bell's application to offer long-distance phone service. The time has come to conclude this process, and let California consumers benefit as other Americans have.

The state's largest long-distance companies have put up every possible roadblock to Pacific Bell's entry into long-distance. They don't want to face Pacific Bell's competition, services or pricing. It's time for the stalling to end.

Thousands of Californians -- including consumers, business organizations, community groups and organized labor -- have called for the CPUC to bring the competition to our state's long-distance marketplace:
