Toronto--To no one's great surprise, the Ontario Press Council upheld a "newspaper's right to publish material that some readers may find offensive" after hearing the complaints of a reader against the London Free Press The London Free Press is a daily newspaper based in London, Ontario, Canada.

The London Free Press began as the Canadian Free Press, founded by William Sutherland in 1847. It first began printing as a weekly newspaper in 1849.

Despite passionate but well-reasoned arguments in favour of tolerance for the sensibilities of Christians, the Ontario Press Council was more swayed by editor Philip McLeod in defence of the London Free Press. Mr. McLeod upheld his paper's "right" to take potshots at religion by declaring that "there are as many hypocrites in organized religion today as there were when Jesus walked the earth"--thereby slandering not only millions of living believers, but countless devout de·vout
