FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1998--

World's Leading Mouse Maker Reaches a New Manufacturing Milestone

Just 1.5 Years After Shipping its 100 Millionth Mouse

Logitech (Nasdaq:LOGIY)(Switzerland:LOGZ), international market leader in human interface devices designed to provide a natural, intuitive link between people and computers, and widely recognized as the world's largest manufacturer of computer mice, announces the shipment of its 200 millionth mouse.

This marks the latest milestone for the company known for innovative mouse technology and award-winning industrial design.

30th Birthday of the Mouse

On December 9th, Logitech and other high tech industry leaders joined in sponsoring "Engelbart's Unfinished Revolution," a one-day symposium held at Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. (still the legal name). The original campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. David Starr Jordan was its first president.  to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the computer mouse's public debut and honor the visionary work of Douglas C. Englebart, inventor of the mouse and numerous other aspects of today's graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

"It's a rather unique set of circumstances that has enabled us to celebrate both a great milestone for Logitech and the contributions of the person whose invention made our company possible," said Guerrino De Luca Guerrino De Luca is the president and CEO of Logitech, and has been since February 1998.

Originally from Italy, he holds a degree in Engineering from the University of Rome, and now resides in San Francisco with his wife Daniela, and two daughters, Ottavia and Chiara.
, Logitech's president and chief executive officer. "Today, we continue to investigate new industrial design forms and technologies that make the mouse and its derivatives even more intuitive, comfortable, and effective in connecting the analog world where we live with the digital world of information. To this end, we offer a broad range of mice, trackballs and other human interface devices designed to serve individual preferences in a variety of computing environments."

The Early Years

It was in the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  arena that Logitech gained the skills necessary to become a world-class manufacturer and laid the groundwork for subsequent expansion into the retail market in 1985. Early on, Logitech understood the importance of timely responsiveness to customer design needs, stringent quality control, effective logistics and distribution systems and the ability to quickly adapt to changing demands.

After its initial market entry as a supplier for Apple, Logitech grew its customer base to include companies such as Hewlett-Packard, DEC, Convergent Technologies (company) Convergent Technologies - A company formed by a small group of people who left Intel Corporation in 1979. Convergent Technologies' first product was the IWS (Integrated Workstation) based on the Intel 8086, which ran Convergent Technologies Operating System - their first , AT&T and others.

Today, the company produces approximately six mice per second at its manufacturing facilities in Asia, supplying pointing devices An input device used to move the pointer (cursor) on screen. Continuing Evolution

As people continue to discover new ways to use their PCs, Logitech continues to provide innovative interface devices which address these evolving user needs.

For example, as the Internet assumes a greater role in the lives of most PC users, four different Logitech mice provide both multiple buttons for command shortcuts See Win Shortcuts.  and a scrolling wheel that enables these users to navigate easily through long Web pages and other documents. Recently, Logitech added the benefits of cordless radio technology to the scrolling mouse, with the award-winning Cordless Wheel Mouse.

Looking ahead, Logitech believes that control devices used in 3D applications, currently found in the computer-aided design computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), form of automation that helps designers prepare drawings, specifications, parts lists, and other design-related elements using special graphics- and calculations-intensive  environment, will migrate to the consumer market as more and more users acquire systems powerful enough to handle the manipulation of objects in space.

"Think of the possibility of shopping on the Web and being able to turn an object around and look at it from all sides before purchasing it," said De Luca. "Today, this capability is available in a high-end control device called the Magellan(tm). In a few years, we should see this same power in the hands of the average computer user."

Earlier this year, Logitech introduced several game controllers that feature "force feedback" technology for realistic play. The company is currently working with Immersion Corporation Immersion Corporation of San Jose, California, is a developer of haptic technology.
