Systems (LMASC) has selected CATIA A family of 2D and 3D CAD programs from IBM. CATIA was one of the first CAD programs to provide 3D solid modeling. The program was developed by Dassault Systems, a French aerospace company. (b)-CADAM(c) Drafting and ProductManager(a), a data management system, as the tools to facilitate a reengineering of the design and manufacture processes for its C-130 aircraft program. It is one of the most advanced tactical transport aircrafts being built today. With this announcement, the C-130 program will become a part of Lockheed's state-of-the-art Coordinated Product Definition and Release Environment.

LMASC has already begun migrating its design processes to CATIA- CADAM A full-featured IBM mainframe CAD application, which includes 3D capability, solid modeling and numerical control. Originally developed by Lockheed for internal use, it was distributed by IBM starting in the late 1970s. In 1989, IBM purchased the Lockheed subsidiary, CADAM, Inc.  Drafting and ProductManager. By year-end, LMASC expects to be running more than 150 seats of CATIA-CADAM Drafting, plus 50 seats of CATIA-CADAM Hybrid Raster The horizontal lines (scan lines) displayed on a TV or computer monitor. This is the origin of the term "raster graphics," which is the major category that all bitmapped images and video frames fall into (GIF, JPEG, MPEG, etc.). , to support this program. The CATIA-CADAM Drafting seats will be running on IBM RS/6000(a) workstations and IBM PCs with Microsoft Windows See Windows.

Under the ProductManager implementation, a comprehensive master vault of engineering data has been created containing more than 24,000 active C-130 drawings. LMASC is now using ProductManager to facilitate electronic document control and management, as well as electronic release of C-130 design elements. ProductManager is also being used to store engineering drawings, specifications, standards, design handbook documents, manufacturing process specifications and production illustrations.

Following the implementation of these systems for the C-130 program, LMASC will apply ProductManager to the F-22 aircraft program as well.

LMASC has been designing and manufacturing C-130 aircraft in Marietta for more than 30 years, using a combination of paper-based drawing techniques and host-based CADAM tools. Drawings, reports and specifications were separately released and managed. Although the processes for each of these were individually effective and professional, the C-130 management team knew that continued program quality and cost effectiveness required a set of more advanced tools working together in a coordinated environment.

The selection of CATIA-CADAM Drafting products was based on demanding yet practical criteria. The criteria included retaining and improving the high level of productivity and user satisfaction previously experienced by CADAM users, support of both UNIX UNIX

and Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  platforms as well as interoperability with existing CADAM data, ability to convert and update scanned paper drawings electronically in a hybrid (combined) raster and CAD format, and full integration with IBM's ProductManager.

"By using CATIA-CADAM Solutions in conjunction with ProductManager, we are taking major steps towards a true virtual product development environment. Throughout our organization, engineers and others will truly have the information they need at their fingertips "Fingertips" is a 1963 number-one hit single recorded live by "Little" Stevie Wonder for Motown's Tamla label. Wonder's first hit single, "Fingertips" was the first live, non-studio recording to reach number-one on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the United States. , regardless of where it's physically stored or what software system it's part of" said Douglas Gates, LMASC Manager of Product Data Services. "The power of these two systems, and their tight integration with each other, will help us reduce the use of manual drawings and their associated overhead and span time for changes, modernize our release process, cut design schedules and improve communications with our partners, suppliers and the government."

"We are delighted in working so closely and effectively with Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems and with IBM to implement this far reaching solution," states Philippe Forestier, General Manager of Dassault Systemes of America. "This teamwork benefits not only Lockheed Martin, but provides the knowledge and experience that will benefit the many users who seek the advantages of the CATIA-CADAM solutions family as a truly integrated component of their corporate product process."

Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems, based in Marietta, Georgia Marietta is a city located in central Cobb County, Georgia GR6, and is its county seat.

As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 58,748, making it one of metro Atlanta's largest suburbs.
, is the world-wide leader in the design and manufacture of tactical fighter and cargo airlift aircraft. Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems is a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Company, the largest US government supplier of aircraft, missiles and airborne electronics. Last February, Lockheed announced a long-term strategic partnership with IBM and Dassault Systemes for the development of an integrated virtual development environment which will allow designers and engineers to simulate every aspect of airplane design, support and manufacture before parts, tools, and processes are actually created.

CATIA-CADAM Drafting products are the most advanced, yet user- friendly, layout and drafting systems available. They bring the intuitive and productive CADAM 2 1/2 D design and drafting paradigm onto the Windows-NT platform and into the CATIA Solutions family.

CATIA-CADAM Solutions Version 4 provide unique Solutions for integrated product and processes development and teamwork optimization. It includes an evolutionary architecture, which enables customer growth and leading edge applications for task and process optimization Process optimization is the practice of making changes or adjustments to a process, to get results.

Optimization is the use of specific techniques to determine the most cost effective and efficient solution to a problem or design for a process.
. CATIA(a) and CADAM(b) are developed by Dassault Systemes and marketed and supported worldwide by IBM. These solutions are leaders in the CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM marketplace with more than 9,000 customers. Many of the world's largest manufacturers, as well as smaller companies with as few as one or two seats, are gaining a competitive advantage and achieving design excellence with these systems.

ProductManager is IBM's enterprise-wide, scalable PDM (1) (Product Data Management) An information system used to manage the data for a product as it passes from engineering to manufacturing. The data includes plans, geometric models, CAD drawings, images, NC programs as well as all related project data, notes and  system which runs as a client/server application on a wide range of UNIX servers, including IBM's RS/6000(a). ProductManager enables manufacturers to streamline the design and manufacturing process and reduce both design costs and cycle times. It acts as a data vault, providing a single source of product information and offering users in disparate locations fast and easy access to the most current data, wherever the data resides. -0- (a) Indicates a trademark or registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation (b) CATIA is a registered trademark of Dassault Systemes S.A.
