Lockheed Martin Vought Systems successfully fires LOSAT from Hummer.

DALLAS, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 1, 1996--Lockheed Martin Vought Systems' Line-of-Sight Antitank (LOSAT LOSAT Line-Of-Sight Antitank ) weapon system has been successfully test fired from an expanded-capacity High-Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle Noun 1. wheeled vehicle - a vehicle that moves on wheels and usually has a container for transporting things or people; "the oldest known wheeled vehicles were found in Sumer and Syria and date from around 3500 BC"

(HMMWV HMMWV High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV is a trademark of AM General LLC; aka HUMVEE, also a trademark of AM General LLC)  or Hummer) at White Sands Missile Range White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), formerly known as the White Sands Proving Grounds, is a rocket range in New Mexico operated by the United States Army. The range covers an area of almost 3,200 mi² (8 287 km²), approximately three times the size of Rhode Island, making it , N.M. The successful firing proved the Hummer to be a suitable platform for LOSAT.

The June 25 test was conducted to gauge launch effects of LOSAT's Kinetic Energy kinetic energy: see energy.

Form of energy that an object has by reason of its motion. The kind of motion may be translation (motion along a path from one place to another), rotation about an axis, vibration, or any combination of
Missile (KEM) on the Hummer and its crew. Instrumentation in and around the vehicle measured launch effects on a simulated crew and the vehicle itself, with all post-launch readings falling well within the Army's acceptable ranges.

LOSAT, currently in the technology demonstration phase, is being proposed for the Hummer due to the cancellation of its previous platform, the Armored Gun System. The U.S. Army is evaluating LOSAT on the Hummer to greatly improve the anti-armor capability of early entry forces.

LOSAT is a hit-to-kill weapon that uses the kinetic energy of direct impact to defeat present and future armored threats and other targets. The LOSAT missile, which travels at the hypervelocity speed of one mile per second and destroys its target upon impact without the use of conventional ordnance or an explosive warhead.
