Lockheed Martin Energy Systems Saves Federal Tax Dollars by Employing DOCUMENTUM RightSite; U.S. Department of Energy Site Manages Business-Critical Documents on its Intranet.

PLEASANTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 1997--DOCUMENTUM Inc. (NASDAQ:DCTM) today announced that it was chosen as Lockheed Martin Energy Systems' Web-based records management system for the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge Operations.

Lockheed Martin Energy Systems sought out a Web content management system to manage time-sensitive and business-critical documents over an intranet. After only six months of deployment, Lockheed Martin Energy Systems has succeeded in achieving substantial cost savings in document labor, reproduction and distribution by employing DOCUMENTUM Enterprise Document Management System (EDMS) and RightSite.

Lockheed Martin Energy Systems is using DOCUMENTUM RightSite for expediting the creation, editing, approval and distribution of environmental management documents amongst various government agencies for the DOE's Environmental Management and Enrichment Facilities (EMEF). Lockheed Martin Energy Systems' charter includes environmental and waste management across the five DOE installations it manages in Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky.

In the spring of 1996, Lockheed Martin Energy Systems (LMES) found itself tasked with managing more than 70,000 documents at the Eastern Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP). LMES explored both internally developed systems and products from document management vendors. LMES turned to an outside consulting firm, the Delphi Consulting Group, to assist them in its document management needs assessment. The Delphi Consulting Group helped LMES in its decision to purchase a document management system, rather than build their own. They also conducted a survey of the commercial marketplace. Lockheed Martin chose DOCUMENTUM from a short-list of four vendors identified by the Delphi Consulting Group based on DOCUMENTUM's established Web capabilities and enterprise scalability.

DOCUMENTUM RightSite manages a typical ETTP document through its complete lifecycle and business process. An author initiates a workflow request by using a desktop Web browser and completing an HTML form. The HTML form, which contains information about the document including necessary deadlines, populates the DOCUMENTUM repository with the business-critical information. Individuals, such as record analysts, contribute to the document by assigning record retention periods and index numbers complying with CERCLA (Superfund) requirements. Throughout the entire process, many individuals depend upon having the most current and approved version of the document instantaneously. Future uses of DOCUMENTUM include a Web repository to replace duplicate hard copy files to provide public access to the information.

The early cost savings, in excess of $100,000, have demonstrated Lockheed Martin Energy Systems' positive return on investment with DOCUMENTUM RightSite. Recently, LMES performed an evaluation of its 95 information technology systems at its EMEF facility. The DOCUMENTUM system emerged as one of the top IT systems deemed crucial to operations. As a result, the LMES is recommending that the DOE continue to augment the Web content management system. LMES is evaluating the use of DOCUMENTUM DocLink for SAP's R/3 for tight integration to other lines of business applications.
