:HRS) announced today that it was recently awarded an $8.1 million contract by Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems, Syracuse, N.Y., to provide a graphical weather data solution supporting the implementation of an integrated weather radar system for the government of Romania The Government of Romania (Romanian: Guvernul României) is the executive branch of Romania. The National Integrated Meteorological System, or SIMIN, uses modern environmental and meteorological sensors with Lockheed Martin's WSR-98D Doppler weather radar and weather satellites to provide up-to-the-minute weather information. Harris will supply its advanced, real-time weather processing and display system, NexReap(TM), to support Romanian meteorologists and other worldwide users who rely on the SIMIN for critical weather analysis.

Romania not only endures some of the most extreme weather conditions in Central and Eastern Europe The term "Central and Eastern Europe" came into wide spread use, replacing "Eastern bloc", to describe former Communist countries in Europe, after the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989/90. , but also faces a challenge in communicating weather conditions within its own country since its territory is bisected by the Carpathian Mountains. SIMIN will enhance Romania's real-time capability to detect, monitor, and forecast weather phenomena.

Administered by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology hydrology, study of water and its properties, including its distribution and movement in and through the land areas of the earth. The hydrologic cycle consists of the passage of water from the oceans into the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration (or  (INMH INMH Indiana Magazine of History ), SIMIN will link to a central operations facility, six regional forecast centers, and 10 primary subscriber locations. Initially, all the subscribers will be government-related, but once the system is operational, INMH will expand its subscriber base to commercial companies such as television stations.

SIMIN will be brought on-line incrementally to provide weather detection and prediction capabilities as early as possible. The system is expected to become fully operational in late 2002.
