Local section news.The Pacific Section Tappi held the 66th Annual Shibley Awards Competition at the Weyerhaeuser Albany Training Center on January 22, 2004. The Shibley Award is an annual competition named in memory of Kenneth "Cap" Shibley. He was, prior to his death in 1937, one of the prominent chemical engineers of the Pacific Northwest. The award consists of the presentation of technical material by young professionals and students actively engaged in the pulp and paper industry The global pulp and paper industry is dominated by North American (United States, Canada), northern European (Finland, Sweden) and East Asian countries (such as Japan). Australasia and Latin America also have significant pulp and paper industries. . The true value of the competition lies in the training, experience, and prestige gained by every contestant in planning and executing the work, and in preparing and presenting their work to colleagues. The competition is open to young professionals (35 years of age or younger) who have not yet gained substantial experience (less than 10 years technical experience in the industry), and are not in supervisory positions over other salaried professionals. It has become tradition that all presenters receive a clock engraved en·grave tr.v. en·graved, en·grav·ing, en·graves 1. To carve, cut, or etch into a material: engraved the champion's name on the trophy. 2. with their name and date of participation. Additionally, this years winners John Straub, Nick Scaief and Erin DeBree received checks for $300, $200 and $100 respectively for finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
