"I feel this is a wonderful way for students to speak with each other and exchange information before they meet in person next March," says Henry Ticknor, principal of the Herndon Middle School. "Since the exchange program began in 1987, there has always been an awkward period when students first meet. Now BT offers the students the opportunity to speak and see each other face to face on a regular basis." The actual exchange program begins next March when students from each school will move abroad for a period of three weeks. At that time, BT expects to have all of its videoconferencing systems and phone lines installed and operational. Ongoing use of the equipment is expected to take place among students from Herndon Middle School, Calday Grange Grammar School and Friedrich-Vom-Stein-Schule in Hessen, Germany. "BT is excited about donating this equipment to these schools and proud to participate in this program. Education today is based on current events and what better way for students to experience the world that through the words and expressions of peers," said Richard Chiapparoli, vice president of BT U.S. Systems Engineering Center. "If our equipment can enhance the educational experience for these and other students then the financial commitment is well worth the effort."
