 de Lavallade (who received a Dance Magazine Award in 1966) on March 14, at The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Also featured are Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founder of the groundbreaking Urban Bush Women, and former Dance Theatre of Harlem Dance Theatre of Harlem, the first black classical ballet company. The group was founded in Harlem, New York City, by Arthur Mitchell, then of the New York City Ballet, the first black principal dancer of a classical company of international standing.  principal dancer Virginia Johnson, who currently edits Pointe magazine. The series began on December 13 with performances by choreographers Dianne McIntyre and Blondell Cummings, and Sarita Allen, a former Alley dancer who now performs with Complexions. It continued on February 14 with dancer/choreographer Mercedes Ellington; Dyane Harvey, former principal dancer with Forces of Nature Dance Theatre; and producer Glory Van Scott, a former dancer of the Katherine Dunham Company The Katherine Dunham Company, a troupe of dancers, singers, actors and musicians, was the first African American modern dance company. It descended from Ballet Negre, a student troupe founded by Katherine Dunham, which later became the Negro Dance Troupe. .
