Local clubs set the mood for 2003.

Byline: LEWIS TAYLOR The Register-Guard

IF YOU THINK you've seen all the various mind-sets of Mood Area 52, you might want to be at Sam Bond's Garage, 407 Blair Blvd., on New Year's Eve. That's the night the instrumental tango ensemble gets vocal.

The group will host a cabaret-style New Year's Eve party that culminates with the staging of a scene from the classic 1950 film `Sunset Boulevard Sunset Boulevard is a street in the western part of Los Angeles County, California, that stretches from Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Coast Highway at the Pacific Ocean in the Pacific Palisades. .'

"It's just a matter of doing something new," said Michael Roderick, the band's accordion player. "We've got a pretty good fan base as we are as an instrumental band, but having each of the musicians in this band sing, which is a really personal and kind of revealing thing to do, just shows a different side of all the people that are involved."

It isn't just the members of Mood Area 52 who will be singing either. The band will accompany the night's opening act Ed Cole, who comes on at 9:30 p.m. with his group the College Girls College Girls is a Channel 4 documentary series, first transmitted in the UK from 8 September 2002. The documentary followed the lives of six students who studied at St Hilda's College, Oxford, the last remaining single-sex college at the University of Oxford, between 1998  of Tora Bora Tora Bora (Pashto: تورا بورا, “black dust” ), known Locally as Spīn Ghar, is a cave complex situated in the White Mountains (Safed Koh) of eastern Afghanistan (), in the Pachir Wa Agam District of Nangarhar province, .

The band also will be joined by a number of guest vocalists including Reed Gilchrist from the Passout Kings, Marietta Bonaventure, owner of Foolscap fools·cap

Roderick wouldn't offer too many specifics about the songs, but he did say the music would include jazz standards, Latin tunes, cabaret music, country and pop. For his part, he will be performing original country songs for kids.

"I think the material they (the vocalists) pick will kind of show something about them and also give them an opportunity to be creative in a different way," Roderick said. "The whole notion of doing a cabaret night just seems to fit with the whole band."

The highlight of Mood Area 52's performance will come just short of midnight, when the group will sync up with the clock and re-enact re·en·act also re-en·act

The "Sunset Boulevard" scene has special meaning for Mood Area 52. Roderick - who co-founded the group with his brother and two other musicians - was inspired by the tango band featured in the film. Named by Sam Bond's bartender Ty Connor after a local fixation with the number 52, the group is basically a quartet that frequently plays with guest members.

The core group features Roderick, Dan Schmid (bass), Adam Wendt (guitar) and Amy Danziger (cello); guest members include Kee Zublin (tenor sax), Dustin Lanker (piano) and Anthony Dyer (violin).

Zublin and Dyer will both be playing with the group for Tuesday's show. Lanker will be in Florida performing a New Year's Eve show with the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.

The cover for Tuesday's show is $5.
