Local Weather Company Flying High; Minnesota-based Kavouras, Inc. and DTN Win MnWAS Contract

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), Office of Aeronautics has awarded the team of Minnesota-based Kavouras, Inc., and Data Transmission Network (DTN) (Nasdaq: DTLN) of Omaha, its Minnesota Weather Access System (MnWAS) contract. Kavouras will provide the weather data and flight planning services, while DTN will provide and maintain the computer terminal equipment and an Internet homepage.

MnWAS provides weather information, flight planning and flight plan filing to pilots throughout the state of Minnesota by means of more than 100 computer terminals located at more than 65 airports. In addition, pilots residing in Minnesota have access via the Internet to the same weather graphics, imagery and text-based weather products through a home user program.

"The Office of Aeronautics is excited about bringing the aviation public this advanced technology for the presentation of weather information. Now, pilots will have the best of both worlds -- a satellite delivery system that furnishes graphic products, animated satellite and current radar imagery, as well as commonly used alpha-numeric products and telephone connections providing access to pre-flight planning, flight plan filing, enroute weather packages, and critical information such as Notice to Airmen (NOTAM). We are especially pleased to be able to offer these products to home users via the Internet," said Larry Myking, Director of Aviation Operations for MnDOT's Office of Aeronautics.

Kavouras has provided the MnWAS service to MnDOT for more than 15 years. The original program started with just 18 printer terminals and did not provide home user access.

"We are very proud to be a part of this excellent program," said Steve Madsen, Kavouras' Vice President of Meteorological Operations. "It insures that all Minnesota pilots have accessible and accurate resources for efficient and safe flying."

Since 1984, Omaha-headquartered Data Transmission Network Corporation (DTN), an electronic information and communication services company, has been a leader in the electronic satellite delivery of time-sensitive information.

Founded in 1976, Minnesota-based Kavouras, Inc., provides premium meteorological technology, including weather workstations, highly advanced Doppler radars, data and forecasting services to private industries and governments across the globe.
