Local University Students Gain Hands-on Experience at Standard Process Inc.

PALMYRA, Wis. -- On April 5, 2007, the Research and Development department at Standard Process Inc.[R], a manufacturer of nutritional whole food supplements, hosted an undergraduate class from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The visit served as a way to expose students to a method that is critical to today's biotechnology industry.

Dr. Kirsten Crossgrove of UW-Whitewater brought students from her Biotechnology Lab Methods course so that they could utilize the cell culture facilities in the Basic Research laboratory at Standard Process.

Students that took part in the course practiced culturing a human liver cancer cell line and took the opportunity to measure the response of these cells to the extracts from various vegetables in terms of the activity of quinone reductase, an enzyme that plays a role in cellular detoxification.

Crossgrove said, "It was nice for the students to get exposure to a tissue culture facility." She explained that many of these students will pursue careers as lab technicians after graduation, so getting exposure to an industry lab was a good experience for them. "[Dr. Hanlon] set up a nice lab for the students," she said. "I hope we can do it again."

Several members of the research and development department were involved in this event, including Dr. Paul Hanlon, manager of basic research at Standard Process. "I think it's important to demonstrate high-quality science in a real-world setting," Hanlon said. "Hosting this session was an excellent opportunity for Standard Process to educate students about molecular biology techniques used throughout the field of basic medical research."

Further participation with local colleges and universities is also being planned by Standard Process.
