Loan for struggling airline.
LOAN FOR STRUGGLING AIRLINE. Antigua has approved a US$6 million
(euro4.8 million) loan to help struggling Caribbean airline LIAT, said
Harold Lovell, Aviation Minister, reports AP (May 4, 2006). The company,
which fired one-third of its workers--or 241 employees--in 2002, employs
about 450 in Antigua. The governments of Barbados, St. Vincent, Trinidad
and Antigua share ownership of the Antigua-based airline, which received
a US$16.2 million (euro13 million) bailout from the islands last
October.
