the authors, will help patients have better outcomes and will help caregivers to provide better support. This extensively revised second edition not only provides updated medication information, it also offers the latest information about the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, a new chapter on alternative therapies, more extensive information on nutrition, and useful advice about getting accurate information on rheumatoid arthritis via the Internet.

The text covers the full range of topics, including disease process, coping strategies The German Freudian psychoanalyst Karen Horney defined four so-called coping strategies to define interpersonal relations, one describing psychologically healthy individuals, the others describing neurotic states. , and exercise. The exercise chapters discuss approaches to and the use of exercise for rheumatoid arthritis. Chapter 10, "Specific Exercises," gives a wide range of exercises for range of motion, muscle force, and endurance, and it includes helpful pictures and clearly written directions. The chapters on coping strategies also include specific, easy-to-follow directions for applying these techniques in daily life. The complementary therapies section describes these alternative treatments in a clear and nonjudgmental non·judg·men·tal

manner, giving guidelines for examination, treatments, and sources of information for various techniques. The chapter on nutrition includes food supplements and other chapters address financial problems and practical discussions of travel, childbirth, and research.

Because this book is written primarily for patients and their families, effectiveness studies are not described in detail. The authors have, nonetheless, clearly written this book with effectiveness studies in mind, and they often refer the reader to resources for more information that supports the use of various interventions and treatment strategies.

Further sources of information are provided to help the reader pursue topics of interest. Each chapter ends with a summary, and some chapters include sources for more information or equipment. The medications section includes toll-free telephone numbers for drug companies where available.

The book also includes a glossary, an updated bibliography, and a detailed index.

This book is an excellent guide and resource for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and their families, but it also could be useful for the health care professional who wants to instructor assist patients in coping with their disease. The reading level is rather high (high school or above) and may be too difficult in many areas for patients who have lower levels of education or who read English as a second language.
