Live in Your Head: Concept and Experiment in Britain, 1965-75.WHITECHAPEL ART GALLERY Tired of YBA YBA - Banff, Alberta, Canada (Airport Code) YBA - You'll Be Alright YBA - Young British Artist (generation of British artists born between mid-1960s and 1970s) YBA - Youth Buddhist Association (Hawaii)? The latest survey to reexamine the art of the '60s and '70s, "Live In Your Head" revisits the context of British Conceptualism conceptualism, in philosophy, position taken on the problem of universals, initially by Peter Abelard in the 12th cent. Like nominalism it denied that universals exist independently of the mind, but it held that universals have an existence in the mind as concept. These concepts are not arbitrary inventions but are reflections of similarities among particular things themselves, e.g., the concept male reflects a similarity between Paul and John., in particular the more ephemeral Temporary. Fleeting. Transitory. and far-out practices that flourished during that fabled epoque. In this show, curated by Clive Phillpot and Whitechapel's Andrea Tarsia tarsia: see intarsia., expect to see works by Richard Long and Art & Language alongside more extreme projects: remnants of John Latham's notorious supper at which guests chewed up and spit out pages of Greenberg's Art and Culture; Susan Hiller's early opus incinerated and poured into a test tube; and Gilbert and George's magazine self-portraits bearing the legend "George the Cunt/Gilbert the Shit."
