Lee Harvey Oswald - United States assassin of President John F. He was convicted of the November 24, 1963 murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, two days after Oswald's arrest for the two days later. There was general alarm: Had either Oswald or Ruby acted alone or as agents of Fidel Castro's communist Cuba or even Russia? Kennedy had continued the strong anti-Castro policy of the Eisenhower presidency as the U.S. aided in an ill-fated attack on Cuba in the Bay of Pigs The Bay of Pigs (Spanish: Bahía de Cochinos, also known as Playa Girón) is an inlet of the Gulf of Cazones on the south coast of Cuba. and confronted Russia in the Cuban Missile Crisis Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962, major cold war confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. After the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the USSR increased its support of Fidel Castro's Cuban regime, and in the summer of 1962, Nikita Khrushchev secretly decided to . The new President, Lyndon B. Johnson, appointed the Warren Commission Warren Commission, popular name given to the U.S. Commission to Report upon the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, established (Nov. 29, 1963) by executive order of President Lyndon B. Johnson. to provide a definitive report; however, the Commission's conclusion that Oswald acted alone was questioned amidst evidence of more than one shooter in Dallas and Oswald's connections to Russia and the cuban exile community. Stories proliferated--defenders of the Warren Commission vs. conspiracy buffs. In addition to materials from previous investigations, Russo had access to documents released in recent years; he conducted personal interviews. What emerges is a compelling account of U.S. efforts to eliminate Castro, headed by President Kennedy's brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. In the political milieu of the times, had those activities become known, they could well have led to nuclear war. One by one, President Johnson, the Warren Commission and a Senate subcommittee all came to the conclusion that what needed to be covered up was the secret war against Castro, which almost surely led to the death of JFK, even if Oswald was not part of a "conspiracy." Castro has been in power for more than 40 years, and the political fallout of the secret war continues to this day. This audiobook provides relevant context for many of today's events and attitudes, perhaps particularly important for YAs. Cullen's reading flows. It is well paced, with exactly the right tone; he grips the listener's attention. Russo is brilliant in his organization of the material, carefully delineating sources and the strength of his inferences. This is an exceptionally good audiobook and should be part of any collection on JFK. Vivian E. Berg, Mandan, ND |
